Publication Date: March 2014
Genre: Adult, Contemporary Romance
Goodreads || Amazon

Synopsis:
Even after years of trauma therapy, Peyton still believes she’s broken. She has little desire to date or show off her natural beauty, content simply to hang out with her best friends and run her pie shop in New Orleans. But her world turns upside-down when a handsome architect and self-confessed player shows up in her shop and thinks she’s perfect, much more than the usual hook-up. While Peyton does her best to resist his charms, believing she could never be enough for him, she can’t deny the obvious heat between them. With Reed determined to have her, Peyton must decide whether to continue to hide behind her apron and baggy clothes or take a chance and share her scars with Reed, a man with a playboy reputation and scars of his own -- a dark past he can’t possibly share with Peyton, not after learning the horrors she’s endured. But if they can find a way to trust each other, and themselves, they just might be able to heal, to save each other, to live perfectly broken together.

Review

Perfectly Broken was just simply beautiful. Both Peyton and Reed were just broken in their own way, especially with all the insecurities and fears that linger with them, no matter where they go. The romance between Peyton and Reed was just simple stunning because somehow, these two scarred people were brought together and helped each other live for the future, instead of living in the past.

Peyton was so vulnerable and broken, but that’s what just made the story even more amazing. It made me wonder and curious about what really happened to her, that made her that way. She seemed like a weak character at first, and I thought that she was shallow, but who am I to judge her when I can’t even put myself in her shoes, right? Contrary to what I thought, she was a really strong person. She may have a lot of trust issues, but that’s really understandable.

Reed, on the other hand, had a playboy image, and has scars of his own. He may not seem like it, but he was also damaged on his own way. I really enjoyed his personality; he is patient, sensitive and sweet. He can be serious, but also has a playful nature. He knows how to push, when to push, and when not to push. There were a lot of times that he crossed some lines, but he genuinely tries his very best to fix up his mistakes.

The sub-characters were also amazing, especially Quinn, Bret and Dr. Lorraine. They were all quirky and can just manage to make me smile. Prescott Lane did a great job in balancing the serious and fun parts, and that was really nice. Although, I think I had a problem with the pacing of this novel. At first I couldn’t really decide, if it was slow or fast, but I think it became a little too fast towards the end of the novel. Maybe that’s just me, but, yeah. There were also at times that the shifting POVs got confusing. They’d suddenly change midway, and even the sub-characters had their own voices at times.

Either way, the title was just befitting with the story, because Peyton and Reed were just simply like that: perfectly broken. This is a breathtaking novel about strength, family, and taking that leap of faith. It just made me realize the vulnerability and being broken does not make your entire personality, and that sometimes, it’s okay to be broken and damaged, too, because we’re beautiful that way, in any direction we look from.

Review

I’ve been hearing about how good and tear-jerking this book is, so I decided to give it a try. For me, the beginning seemed promising, but by the time I got to the middle, I seriously wanted to just rate this book two or three stars. Why?

Beth was so whiny, so needy, so clingy, and so complying. It was really annoying, like, seriously, don’t you have any self-respect for yourself? I get that the attention to her was a whole new thing because of her transformation. But still, it’s really not much of an excuse for her. Moreover, she just met Derek, and then she fell for him right away. She knows that Scott, her best friend, likes her, but she doesn’t really do anything about it.

I didn’t like Derek all too well, either. He was so controlling and manipulative that just made me want to punch him. He was such a jerk. I just don’t get the way he thinks, especially when he pushes Beth away, but keeps coming back for more. Bipolar.

The romance between Beth and Derek does not have any build-up, and it all happened so suddenly, that the love they have for each other didn’t feel so genuine. Not to mention that Meadow, a girl from Beth’s choir, had her eyes on Derek, but there was really no closure on what had happened. I mean, she’s like a cheerleader, and she doesn’t seem to be the type to just back down to Beth over Derek. But maybe, that’s just me.

The whole middle part was an annoying cycle. Beth meets Derek. They make out. Beth wants more. Derek pushes her away. She gets mad, whiney, needy, clingy. He gets mad. He leaves. She gets depressed, thinking he’s not coming back. They don’t speak for weeks. And the whole cycle repeats again. It was very tiring, but worth it.

The ending was just absolutely breathtaking, beautiful, stunning, crappola. *inserts more synonymous words* I’m not going to say anything about the ending, otherwise it’d be a spoiler. But it was damn beautiful. The tears just kept on coming, and they won’t stop. I was like ASUDHANISDNAKJ the whole time.

Oh, and how I love the lyrics of the songs, especially the ones that Beth wrote. Sing Me to Sleep just sucked me into the story (aside from the whole cycle thing,) and I could feel what the characters were feeling. It was hell of a emotional ride being with them.

Sing Me to Sleep is a simple, tear-jerking, and wonderful story about life, love and family. It made me realize that people live their life, despite whatever they’re going through. And, we may not know, but who knows? We may have already become a source of strength and inspiration to others, just by being ourselves. I’ll totally recommend this to young adult, romance readers!

Review: The Originals

Author: Cat Patrick
Publication Date: May 7, 2013
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary Romance, Science Fiction

Synopsis from Goodreads:
Lizzie, Ella, and Betsey Best grew up believing they were identical triplets.

Then they learned the truth...

and no one else can know.

Now, to the outside world, the Best family appears to consist of a single mother with one seventeen-year-old daughter named Elizabeth. Lizzie, Ella, and Betsey take turns going to school, pursuing extracurriculars, and even dating.

Then Lizzie meets Sean Kelly, the one person who can help her realize she's not a carbon copy of the others - she's an individual with unique dreams and desires. Digging deeper into her background and her mother's role in her life, Lizzie begins to dismantle the delicate balance of an unusual family that only science could have created.

Review

I've seen this title in bookstores a lot of times already, and I guess that's one of the reasons why I felt like I should give it a shot. The summary seemed okay; it kind of got me curious about how the author would make such a story play out.

Unfortunately, I was really disappointed after (and even while) reading this book. The main character herself got on my nerves real quick. Lizzie is just so immature about everything. She agrees to something, but when she doesn’t win the deal, she complains about how unfair it is. Would it kill her to be a little less selfish? I get that she feels like she doesn’t have a life because she has to share it with her two sisters, but throwing all these tantrums because of a boy? It’s really stupid.

The idea for the plot was new (for me at least), but the rest of the story was not quite compelling enough. I felt that the whole story wasn't explained thoroughly, leaving a lot of questions unanswered. A few characters seemed like they were just thrown in for convenience, then they’re never heard of again. Some parts of it were just shallow for me, as I thought it would deal with more serious matters than a teenage girl whining over not getting what she wanted. There were some interesting events, I admit, but others were just bland.

Overall, it was an okay read, but I’m sorry to say that I don’t think it’s something that would really leave a mark on its readers. If you’re up for it, though, you can give it a try!

Title: All Lined Up
Author: Cora Carmack
Publication Date: May 13, 2014
Genre: New Adult, Contemporary Romance

Synopsis from Goodreads:
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Cora Carmack follows up her trio of hits—Losing It, Faking It, and Finding It—with this thrilling first novel in an explosive series bursting with the Texas flavor, edge, and steamy romance of Friday Night Lights.

In Texas, two things are cherished above all else—football and gossip. My life has always been ruled by both.

Dallas Cole loathes football. That's what happens when you spend your whole childhood coming in second to a sport. College is her time to step out of the bleachers, and put the playing field (and the players) in her past.

But life doesn't always go as planned. As if going to the same college as her football star ex wasn’t bad enough, her father, a Texas high school coaching phenom, has decided to make the jump to college ball… as the new head coach at Rusk University. Dallas finds herself in the shadows of her father and football all over again.

Carson McClain is determined to go from second-string quarterback to the starting line-up. He needs the scholarship and the future that football provides. But when a beautiful redhead literally falls into his life, his focus is more than tested. It's obliterated.

Dallas doesn't know Carson is on the team. Carson doesn't know that Dallas is his new coach's daughter.

And neither of them know how to walk away from the attraction they feel.

Wrap Up ;)

Pauline
Yay! I may not have finished my 5 books, but I'm still so glad. This is actually more than what I usually read a week, and I got to read everyday! Well, except for the Monday because I was still having a book hangover on Maybe Someday. Having read 1279 pages certainly helped a lot to my 500 Thousand Pages goal. I was also able to write reviews on almost all the books I read, aside from Just One Year. I just don't know what to write there. :o

I really felt more productive and win-win situation this Bout of Books than the previous ones I joined! :D Not to mention, it's my first time that I entered some awesome challenges. I wanted to join the Twitter chats, but somehow they never match with the time here in the Philippines. (I CRY.) But hopefully by next Bout of Books I'll be able to interact with the other readers! Hurrah! ;)

Dyane
Oookay! As I hoped, Bout of Books kind of did get me off my reading slump! Even though I only finished about a book and a half, I think I already got the push to start reading again, all thanks to this challenge. Now I'm off to make the most of the few remaining weeks of summer vacation! :)

Review

Honestly, one of the reasons that I was so excited to read Pretending was because of its gorgeous cover! More than that, though, it truly is a heartwarming novel about family, friends, love, and life.

Let’s move on to the characters. Wesley seemed a bit shallow at first, given his physical appearance and everything, but as his story started to unfold, I realized that there is so much more to him. He turns out to be quite a sweet and caring guy, and it makes me happy that in the end, he was able to open his eyes to the error of his ways.

Dahlia is somewhat similar to Wesley, because she was hiding under this disguise for most of her life. Her reasons initially came across as shallow, but she actually became admirable when more was revealed. It’s nice that she was able to gain the courage and find herself again amidst the mess that was  her life. It was awesome on how she could just stay Switzerland despite Charlotte and Gwen, her two best friends, are at war with each other.

The supporting characters were also great. There’s Gwen, who I found a little lacking in depth, although she’s a good friend to have and does make you think about all the stupid things that we people would do for love. There’s also Charlotte, who was able to find her true self even though there were some things that didn’t go her way. Even the parents of both Dahlia and Wesley really made the story even more complicated, in a good way.

Now we get to the plot. Some parts were too predictable, and the romance developed too quickly for my liking, especially on Wesley’s part.  It just became sort of unrealistic at that point. Although, it’s amazing how both of them are so selfless and were able to gradually help each other grow and become better individuals.

There were also some areas left unresolved, like what happened with Wesley’s parents and also the whole Christine issue with her dad. Despite these things, though, the book still somehow kept me wanting to read more. Going through all these storylines, I came to see how unpredictable love really is. Loving is such a risk, yet we still take it and give it our all, because when we find something so pure and genuine in the chaos that surrounds us… it would be an even bigger risk to let it go.

Pretending is a beautiful story about friendship, love, and most especially family, that is recommended to new adult, contemporary romance readers!
